Raising the mast

I know this might sound like a daft question, but does anyone know the answer ?
My mast is about 26ft tall and currently laying on the foredeck after I repaired the spreaders. I can raise it but I've only done it with help so far, so.
If the backstays are connected and at roughly the right tension, can I just lift it and secure the forestay without needing to support the mast while the rest of the rigging is connected, or do I have to support the mast until everything is done up ?
